March 02 Pam's JournalI was out of town, and I have to say working out in a hotel gym is very interesting First you don't usually get to go with someone you know, so you're on your own. Then when you get there, you're never sure what type of people are going to show up. The first night I was there, I was the only person, I could watch what I want on TV and work out on the equipment like I wanted. The second night I was there, there were 3young kids (about 10-12 years old) with no parent. And although I was glad to see kids working out, I was frustrated that they were more "playing" than working out, and getting in my way. The whole time I was there I felt I needed to keep an eye on these kids so they didn't get hurt or hurt me! The third night I was there, when I arrived, another woman was already there working out, she was on the bike. I went to get on the treadmill and she informs me, that she's going there next, when she's done with the bike. When I asked when, she said it would be a little while, so I got on. I wasn't on 5 minutes when she said it was her turn! So I figured I'd take the bike (less chance of "getting in her way"). Big mistake, once I got on, she proceeded to tell me everything she thought I was doing wrong on the bike! I wasn't going fast enough, I wasn't on to the handles, etc, etc,! And because she was in "good shape," her description, not mine, she proceeds to tell me how I can "get in good shape!" I only got a 30 minute work out that night! The next night I went down, I intentionally went down later than usual. There was a man down there working out in street clothes! No big deal to me, so I went about working out. About 15 minutes into it, a hotel employee stopped by and informed the man he needed to be in work out clothes to be in the gym. He proceeded to argue with her about that rule and finally he said fine and left.
I don't know about you all, but when I work out I enjoy the peacefulness, I enjoy getting "into my zone" and just doing what I need to be doing. I don't like a lot of drama when I'm working out, interesting though it might be, I find it stressful. So I was very happy to get home and get back to my routine, where no one bothers me during my workouts! Okay, I'm done whinning! Till next time. ~~pam February 24 Karen's JournalPam was out of town all week. Hope she was working out. I was, but I haven't lost any weight this week. I'm not happy when my work does not show up on the scales. I can, however, feel that my mid-section is tighter. I'm looking forward to getting back to our workout routine. Doing the machines is great because I can count the number of calories I'm burning, but it does get boring. The week before last I showed Pam a move on the ball that our trainer had showed me. The move is like jumping jacks on a ball. Pam wants to take a video of me doing it so everyone can laugh as hard as she did. However, the move is very aerobic and good for those of us with bad knees because your butt takes the impact instead of your knees, ankles, and feet. It's done by sitting on the right size ball for your height, bouncing a little, then adding the arm and leg motion usual for a jumping jack. When I roll off the ball (my balance leaves a lot to be desired), the distance to the floor is small. We now use this move to -- as Jillian recommends -- keep our heart rate up while using weights. Jillian recommended a jump rope, but I could never jump rope -- even before I had bad knees. We had a full moon this week. Is was very cold and windy. I have a great story to tell you next time. I'm hoping to get a cartoon to go with it. The things I do for Pam -- you would not believe. February 13 Pam's JournalWell Karen and I are doing really well this week! We started the week off with our weigh in and we both lost 2 lbs! Very happy with that. And our mindsets have definitely improved, which is always a good thing! Karen and I have continued with our scheduled workout schedule that we would've done with our trainer, and we're having fun "training" each other...smile. We're harder on each other than our trainer ever was. We did so many lunges and squats that my butt is extremely sore today! But I'm assuming that's a good thing. Till next time. ~~pam February 10 Karen's Journal Last week was not good for me. I reverted to my normal, count every calorie, work out everyday, gain weight, get discouraged, eat stuff I shouldn't, and then lose weight and know that if I had just stayed the course; I would have lost more weight. Instead, I'm neither up or down. Which is not bad considering the cookies I ate. Today begins a new week. Pam has challenged me to lose 30 pounds by June. Did I mention we are very competitive with each other? I'm thinking of having gastric bypass surgery. When I was in college, I lost 125 pounds. I kept it off for several years and gained it all bad -- and more. I have now lost 70 pounds from my highest weight. That's great except it has taken me over 15 years. I need new knees, I have high blood pressure, I am diabetic and have higher than the recommended levels of fats in my blood for a diabetic. I need to lose this weight now! The past 15 years have been like watching grass grow. Yes, I am now working out almost everyday. Although I have always been active -- cutting grass, walking in the woods, and so on, I never did regular exercise. My knee problems put me on a cane. The exercise has made the cane unnecessary. But the weight remains. If I don't lose 30 pounds by June, I'm going to have the gastric bypass surgery. It's not a cure, it's a tool to control my appetite. I will still have to work out everyday but everyone, whether they have a weight problem or not, should workout at least 5 days a week. Pam wanted me to put weight loss tips in this blog. After all, I have lost over 200 pounds in my lifetime (not counting all the ups and downs in between). However, I read a little note in one of the health magazines -- never take weight loss advice from an over-weight person. That ended the tip idea. Take advice from someone who used to be overweight or someone who has done extensive research. Pam and I are back on track this week. Check us out next week and see what a week of really following our individual programs can do for us. February 09 Pam's JournalI’m not sure that with all the personal issues Karen and I have dealt with lately, that we mentioned that we no longer have a trainer. We had a trainer who worked out the gym in our building which was very convenient for us. Unfortunately, our trainer didn’t get along so well with the manager of the gym, and now we’re “on our own!” This is doable but having a trainer helped keep us motivated. I guess when you’re paying someone to make sure you workout a couple of times a week, you’re not very likely to come up with excuses not to go!...smile. But we’ve made a commitment to each other not to let this stop us, we’re still going to meet 2 days a week before work and workout. So keep your fingers crossed that we can be successful!
